In 1867, the University of Missouri became the first public university in the nation to establish a college specifically for the preparation of teachers. Today, the College of Education & Human Development continues its rich tradition of inspiring the enterprise of learning, teaching, and discovery.
As a comprehensive, interdisciplinary College, our research strengthens the whole of education and human development. We are improving the lives of countless children, adults, and families while preparing the next generation of educators, administrators, behavior analysts, learning technologists, counselors, child life specialists, psychologists, library and information specialists, policy analysts, researchers, and more.
Now over 50,000, our alumni group is one of the largest among all colleges and schools at Mizzou. We know that Tigers are stronger when they work together, and together we can prepare our graduates for a lifetime of victories. Alumni and donor giving represents a vote of confidence in our College.

Partners Advancing Education Series
The Partners Advancing Education series was established in 2019 by MU College of Education & Human Development alumna Jolene Marra Schulz to support programming critical to the success of students and alumni in the classroom. This series addresses the challenges of pandemic and post-pandemic education by connecting the discoveries of faculty researchers directly to educators. Learn more.

Notable alumni
- Kate Capshaw, BS Ed ’75, M Ed ’77, is an actress best known for her role in the film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and for her marriage to film director Steven Spielberg.
- Sheryl Crow, BS Ed ’84, is an American blues rock singer, guitarist, bassist and songwriter who has garnered nine Grammy Awards. Crow received her degree from the college in secondary education with an emphasis in music education.
- Norm Stewart, BS Ed ’56, M Ed ’60, is best known for his basketball coaching career at Mizzou from 1967 to 1999. He retired with an overall record of 731-375 in 38 seasons. The court at Mizzou Arena (and previously at MU’s Hearnes Center) is named in his honor.
