About the Hook Center

Founded in 2004, the Hook Center for Educational Leadership & District Renewal helps educational leaders strengthen schools, improve organizational effectiveness and advance student success. The center serves as a bridge between research, practice and policy, translating ideas, experiences and evidence-based strategies into practical tools, professional learning opportunities and improvement processes that support schools, districts and educational organizations.

Through partnerships with educators, school systems, policymakers and communities, the Hook Center works to address the complex challenges facing education today. By combining research, professional expertise and real-world experience, the center helps leaders build the capacity needed to improve performance, navigate change and create lasting, positive outcomes for students and communities.

Our Focus

The Hook Center’s work centers on three interconnected areas that drive continuous improvement in education:

Systems

Effective schools depend on strong systems, both within educational organizations and across the broader education landscape. The Hook Center helps educational organizations understand how people, structures, policies, and practices work together to support student learning. By focusing on the connections among programs, departments, schools and districts, and the policies that shape them, the center promotes sustainable approaches to continuous improvement and organizational effectiveness. Through research translation and opportunities to engage with education policy experts, the Hook Center helps make complex issues more accessible and supports informed decision-making across education systems.

Processes

Strong leadership requires clear and effective processes. The Hook Center helps educators identify, develop and improve the systems and practices that support governance, decision-making and day-to-day operations. By making successful practices visible, understandable and repeatable, educational leaders are better equipped to manage change and improve outcomes.

People

Educational improvement ultimately depends on people. The Hook Center supports the growth and development of school and district leaders, board members and other education professionals through professional learning, coaching, collaboration and leadership development opportunities that strengthen individual and organizational capacity.

A Legacy of Leadership and Innovation

The Hook Center was established through the generosity and vision of Harold S. Hook and Joanne Townsend Hunt Hook, proud Mizzou alumni whose commitment to leadership, education and service continues to influence generations of educators.

Harold S. Hook (1931-2018) earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1953 and a Master of Arts in Accounting in 1954 and received an honorary Doctor of Law degree in 1983. Joanne graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education.

For Harold and Joanne, giving back to Mizzou was a natural extension of the opportunities they found as students. Harold often described his time at the University of Missouri as “life changing.” Both believed deeply in the power of education to transform lives and communities. Their legacy reflects a shared belief that strong leadership, continuous improvement and service to others create lasting impact.

Together, Harold and Joanne Hook created a lasting legacy at the University of Missouri through their support of educational leadership, innovation and continuous improvement. Their vision continues to help schools, districts and educational leaders build stronger organizations and better opportunities for future generations.
