Can you introduce yourself and your major?
My name is Thomas Skiendziel. I am a graduating senior studying Elementary Education.

Describe your Mizzou experience in 3 words.
I would describe my Mizzou experience as transforming, unexpected, and fulfilling.

What’s your favorite memory from the College of Education & Human Development?
One of my favorite memories from the college was Tiger Reading Buddies with Dr. Sam von Gillern. Tutoring a first-grade student and actively planning small-group reading instruction was eye-opening and a great opportunity to learn how to adapt to what my student needed.

What was the best part of your student teaching experience?
The best part of my student teaching experience was seeing my students grow both academically and personally while building strong relationships with them. There was a moment when I realized they were coming to me as their teacher, not just a student teacher, and that really showed me the impact I was having. Watching my lessons come to life and seeing students engage and succeed made the experience incredibly rewarding.

What advice would you give to your freshman self?
I’d tell my freshman self to trust the process more and not second-guess big decisions, like transferring or pursuing education. I’d also tell myself to soak in the moments, whether it was being part of Marching Mizzou or working with students, because those experiences go by fast but end up meaning the most.

If your Mizzou journey had a theme song, what would it be?
I’d choose “On Top of the World” by Imagine Dragons because the changes I’ve made have allowed me to finally breathe and see the good that’s come from my biggest decisions.

What’s next for you after graduation?
I’ll be teaching third grade at Southern Boone Elementary in Ashland, Missouri!
