Kathy Unrath

Dr. Kathy Unrath is Associate Professor of Art Education at the University of Missouri and the Director of the Art Education program. Her research centers on understanding how the art teacher identity is actualized and artmaking knowledge is acquired and the resonance and dissonance between pre-service education and the learning that is attained in professional practice. Her research is published in journals that include Studies in Art Education, Arts and Learning Research, Visual Arts Research, Canadian Review of Art Education, and Art Education-The Journal of the National Art Education Association (NAEA). She is the 2004 recipient of the NAEA Women’s Caucus Mary J. Rouse Award, and the 2008 NAEA Western Region Higher Education Art Educator of the Year. Her university teaching was recognized in 2005 upon receiving the University of Missouri Provost’s Teaching and Advising Award, the 2012 Maxine Christopher Shutz Award for Distinguished Teaching, the 2015 MU Excellence in Education Award, an d the 2016 College of Education Golden Apple Award. Kathy is a fibers artist whose work is exhibited widely.
