“Edu-neering” Event Kicks Off Cross-College Collaboration

Deans Marisa Chrysochoou from Engineering and Kui Xie from Education and Human Development.

Researchers from Mizzou’s College of Education and Human Development and College of Engineering gathered last week to spark new opportunities for interdisciplinary research and innovation.

The colleges’ deans, Kui Xie from Education and Human Development and Marisa Chrysochoou from Engineering, said the meeting resulted from their shared commitment to building partnerships that combine technical expertise with educational insight.

Organized by Erica Lembke, associate dean for research in Education and Human Development, and Prasad Calyam, interim associate dean for research in the College of Engineering— the networking event brought faculty from both disciplines together to share ideas, explore funding opportunities, and discuss collaborative projects.

“Real-world problems can’t be solved by one field alone,” Xie said. “By connecting our colleges intentionally, we can generate new ideas, strengthen research capacity, and make a broader impact.”

“Seeing such strong interest from engineering faculty shows how ready we are to change old paradigms,” Chrysochoou said. “Our faculty are eager to engage in scholarship that connects education and engineering in meaningful ways.”

Both deans called the event a starting point for more structured and sustainable collaboration across campus. “This is only the beginning,” Xie said. “Together, we can build the kind of interdisciplinary partnerships that make Mizzou stronger.”

Participants met in collaborative groups to discuss research interests and potential opportunities.

“Awareness of each other’s expertise is key,” said Lembke. “Sometimes the right collaborator is just across campus—you just need a way to connect.”
